MIQUEL

BARCELO

I’m a freelance performing artist born in Mallorca and based in Co. Galway, Ireland. Performer, director, musician, teacher and theatre activist with more than 20 years experience.

My craft is in constant research of a creativity that follows the movement of life and sets a dialogue between the artist and its audience. I aim for the creation of a collective, festive and inclusive space for all spheres of society.

I create my own work and I collaborate with companies such as Branar, Macnas, That’s Life and Manifesto Poetico. Every year I run and co-direct a Theatre Summercamp for young artists with Galway performing artist Judith Higgins.

Feel free to submerge in my multidimensional work with all activities related to theatre, music and teaching.

My main inspiration remains in the highly-skilled and multidisciplinary craft of jesters, fools, minstrels and travelling troubadours.

An ancient voice that becomes contemporary; deeply rooted in the tradition while always reaching for new aesthetics that talk to the evolving audience.

The universal language of physical theatre is the instrument of all my stories and the audience not a mere spectator but a close companion of all my theatre journeys.

Music - a communal hearbeat, a kinetic emotion, a festive human state.

I love playing music. I started playing guitar at the age of 8 and I haven’t stopped since then. In all these years pushed by a necessity to adventure new sounds, I have managed to play several instruments: guitarró, ukelele, accordion, flabiol & tamborí (fife & drum) violin, clarinet... and the journey keeps going.

Influenced by all types of music- traditional, modern and experimental- I am drawn to music as a creative and improvisatory device. And of course, to its true and simple capacity for communication.

Music and instruments are an intrinsic part of all my performances and projects. Both as a performer and a composer, my music reveals itself to the audience as a melody, a rhythm, a song, a tune, a soundscape, an ambience, an acrobatic devise and a character.

I understand theatre not as a privilege activity but as a humanistic voice that brings people of all backgrounds together. For that reason, collective spirit and inclusivity have always been at the base of all my teaching projects.

Through the years I’ve taught theatre to professional and amateur performers, students, community groups, children, youth ensembles, elderly citizens and people with disabilities. I’ve learned to listen to the necessities of each group and develop a practice that gives voice to their stories.

All disciplines I teach- physical theatre, mask, clown, storytelling- are nothing but a game that alongside technique, create a space for human interaction based on cooperation, honesty and sincerity.
